It is the urban environment and the psychological impact of our daily surroundings on us that interests me. Indeed, the urban setting is rather chaotic with all the noise pollution, fast-pace lifestyle, high-density housing, and bitumen. Yet the great majesty of the environment, the sky, the light and even the angles in the architecture of Sydney’s suburbs remain compelling. Paradoxically the experience is often simultaneously grandiose yet ridiculous. It is this somewhat ironic theme and visuality, which has provided endless ideas for my practice. My goal is to distil an image that captures something of this experience. The fluidity and immediacy of the ink and gouache mediums coupled with the sustained, direct contemplation of the motif, has promoted in the structure of the images what can be read as psychological responses to urban forms normally experienced as prosaic.
